Why Have Chin Augmentation?

A weak chin can work to make you look grumpy or pouty. A chin implant will create a better balance of your profile, strengthen the jawline and lengthen the look of your neck. The Mentoplasty Procedure (Chin Augmentation) refines your face and reshapes it for a more masculine profile.

A Chin Augmentation (Chinplant is often paired with Liposuction and Rhinoplasty procedures. Liposuction removes excess fat in the cheeks. A Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) completes the new look. Your physician will discuss the option of multiple procedures to be performed at the same time to maximize the benefits to you.

Ready for a stronger looking new and improved chin? Chinplants may answer.

Are you a good candidate for a Chin Augmentation?

While a consultation with a qualified surgeon can assess your qualifications as a candidate for chin augmentation, surgeons are generally looking for the following things.

You have a small or recessive chin and are in good overall health.
You have a jaw that functions normally.
You are a non-smoker.
You have realistic goals about what Chinplants can achieve for you.
Overview of Chin Augmentation surgery

There are two different types of chin implant procedures depending on how well your jaw functions: Mentoplasty and Genioplasty.

Mentoplasty- the surgical procedure generally chosen for men with jaws that function within a normal range. After receiving anesthesia your surgeon makes an incision either under your chin or in your mouth depending on the shape of your face and the doctor’s preference. A small pocket will be made inside the incision to fit the implant directly over the lower jaw bone. Implants are made in several shapes and sizes as well as synthetic materials. A skilled surgeon will select the implants best suited for your face. The implants are tucked into the pocket or sutured into place and the incision is closed. Tape or dressing may be placed over the incision to hold the implant in place for two or three days until the healing process begins. Over time, the implants will become attached to the jawbone and cannot be moved by sports, facial expressions or physical contact.
Genioplasty- the surgical procedure for men with unusually small chins, or a jaw that is not functioning within normal limits. A Genioplasty requires reshaping the jaw bone before the implants are inserted and secured in place. It takes a little longer but it still has done on an outpatient basis.
Firstly, your doctor will take an X-ray or digital image of your chin and face. These images will help to determine the procedure best for you. Both procedures are performed on an out-patient basis so you can leave the doctor’s office or clinic on the same day. A Chinplant can be completed in about one hour but your doctor will give you a timeline for the procedure based on your particular needs.

Immediately after the surgery

After the chin augmentation procedure, you can resume most of your light activities. Your lower lip will feel numb like receiving Novacaine from the dentist. Your chin will feel numb, sore and swollen. Once the anesthesia wears off completely, you may experience residual discomfort for which you may be given a prescription for pain medication.

You will be provided with instructions about what you can and cannot do after the surgery especially if you have multiple procedures done at the same time. After a Chinplant, you will have difficulty chewing plus you don’t want to move your jaw in any way that can dislodge the implants. Expect to be on a liquid or soft foods diet for a few days after the procedure.

You may want to take time off from work depending on the demands of your job. If you talk or engage in physical activity on the job, it would be wise to take a couple of vacation days.
If the implants are inserted from under your chin, the procedure will leave a small scar hidden under your face.

Within two to six weeks, the swelling should have subsided and the visual impact of your new jawline there for the world to see.

Possible Risks and Complications

Even though chin augmentation is a common cosmetic treatment, it does carry with it risks and possible complications. While your surgeon will discuss your particular risks with you, here are some common problems that can occur:

Anesthesia risks
Bruising and swelling
Poor wound healing
Bleeding
Infection
Asymmetry
Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
Your doctor will advise you of general risk factors as well as those related to you and your health profile. You can minimize complications by following the advice of your surgeon, both before and after your Mentoplasty surgery.

Recovery Time and Restrictions

Recovery time varies depending on the patient. Your surgeon will give you post-operative recovery instructions. Your chin may be taped to hold the implants in place and you may be given a garment to wear especially when you sleep. Most certainly you will experience swelling, bruising and numbness for which you may be prescribed antibiotics and pain killers.

In general, patients are able to resume a light schedule following the procedure and have a diet of liquids or soft foods for several days until the gums heal. Your doctor will advise you if a follow-up visit is needed to remove sutures.

Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the body which can increase the risk of infection. If you are a smoker, inform your doctor so that he or she can advise you as to the time when you should refrain from smoking before and after surgery. Or perhaps this surgery is the reason to give up smoking completely!

It may take several weeks for your body to completely heal even though the results of the surgery will be visible almost immediately. Return to your level of normal activity gradually per your doctor’s instructions. If you do too much too quickly it can result in delayed healing or a dislodge the implants.

Remember to Follow Your Doctor’s Orders!

To reduce the unpleasant after-effects of the surgery, follow your doctor’s recommendations closely and notify your healthcare provider if you experience any signs of infection or other health problems.
